Boy Scout 'Bahamas Open' Fishing Tournament Comes to Abaco

MARSH HARBOUR, ABACO, BAHAMAS (April 7, 2010) - The Abaco Beach Resort at Boat Harbour is proud to host the 2010 Boy Scout 'Bahamas Open' fishing tournament, to be held May 12-15. Now in its 39th year of supporting the Boy Scouts in the Caribbean, the tournament is open to all anglers and fishing enthusiasts.

The Bermuda Triangle Series, of which the Bahamas Open is one leg, travels to three hot fishing destinations (Bahamas, Bermuda and Virgin Islands); each leg is an "Open" meaning it stands on its own to allow anglers in the area to compete with anglers in the series. Rooted in philanthropy this tournament is a fund raising event for the Scout Association of both the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands.

"We are very excited about the upcoming tournament, and the quality and value we are offering," said Captain Jimmy Loveland, Tournament Director. "We have an excellent partnership with Abaco Beach Resort, and are ready to go out and run a great tournament in the Bahamas."

Even more, the tournament supports an important cause by partnering with the Bahamas Boy Scouts, which has a membership of more than 1000 youths throughout the family islands of the Bahamas.

"The Boy Scouts of the Bahamas are honored and privileged to be part of the 'Bahamas Open' Fishing Tournament, and we look forward to a long friendship with Abaco Beach Resort," said John Phillpot, President of the Scout Association of the Bahamas. "It is a rewarding cause to support, as the Scout method turns young people into responsible citizens and leaders of tomorrow."

Celebrating almost 100 years of active scouting in the Bahamas, the Boy Scouts work to help support disadvantaged youth and those with special needs, as well as support the growth of Scouting and the redevelopment of the National Camp Site in Nassau.

In this tournament, Anglers choose their line test - choices are 50, 80, or 130 lb. and naturally there is a proportional point spread. The tournament is operated at a "Modified Release" format, meaning competitors can boat a large fish, but it won't count for tournament "points" unless it weighs enough to become a potential Bahamas Record (1060.5 lbs.). The tournament provides ABMT Observers to verify the releases.

The 'Bahamas Open' is primarily an "Anglers Tournament" meaning - May the Best Anglers and Boats Win! Visit the RULES button on: ABMT.VI. Participants will fish for Sailfish, Spearfish, White Marlin and Blue Marlin; this tournament is truly designed for skilled anglers. As with the famous St. Thomas "Boy Scout" event, entrants will be fishing against some of the best anglers and crews in the industry.
