Celebrate Bahamian Independence with Family Fun

ABACO, BAHAMAS (June 14, 2010) - The Abaco Beach Resort at Boat Harbour is excited to celebrate Bahamian Independence with a weekend packed full of events and activities to support the country's national parks and protected areas. The festival will take place during the weekend of July 8 through 11, with proceeds supporting the Bahamas National Trust.

"We are overwhelmed with the generosity of the Abaco Beach Resort and their support of the national parks of Abaco," said a representative of the Bahamas National Trust (BNT), the organization mandated to manage the national park system.

ABACO ART SHOW. With the support of local artists, the BNT will host a special art exhibit "The Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer: Abaco Style" on July 9 and 10 at the Resort. The opening night of the exhibition will feature a silent auction with all proceeds supporting the new Fowl Cays National Park and the Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park.

NATURAL EXCURSIONS. As part of the Independence celebrations, the BNT will organize special field trips to the Abaco National Park to see the Bahama Parrot in its breeding habitat. The tours, running at $35 on 7am-12noon on both the 9th and 10th, will be hosted and led by Florida State University PhD. student Caroline Stahala, who has conducted research on the biology and needs of the endangered Parrot on Abaco, unique among New World Parrots for its ground nesting behavior.

GIVING BACK. As mentioned, the family fest will be supporting Bahamas National Parks and protected areas of the country. The BNT builds and manages the national parks and protected areas of the Bahamas, and is the only self-funded, non-governmental organization that manages a country's entire national park system. The Bahamas National Park system encompasses many unique features: one of the world's largest breeding colonies of West Indian Flamingos; one of the most extensive underwater cave systems; the world's first land and sea park; a site supporting over 30 years of sea turtle research; and a major park on Abaco that was created to protect the northernmost range of the endangered Bahama Parrot.

WEEKEND AGENDA. Over the Bahamian Independence weekend, the resort will feature events such as family fun games, contests, live entertainment and unique art exhibits.  After a July 8th arrival, the enjoyable weekend activity schedule is as follows:
